Finn est homme de main pour un agent immobilier véreux, mais nourrit le rêve secret d'une carrière de boxeur. Lorsque sa dernière victime se montre plus forte que lui, Finn doit accepter sa nature violente et défendre ce en quoi il croit.
Finn works as standover man for shady property developer, but harbours secret dreams of a boxing career. When his latest victim proves more than a match for him, Finn has to come to terms with his own violent nature and make a stand for what he believes in.

L’enfance, la mort et la culture maorie se mêlent étroitement dans ce mélodrame naturaliste teinté de réalisme magique. Kimi et Melody, des jumeaux de dix ans, vivent avec leurs frères et sœurs sur la ferme de leurs parents dans une communauté maorie isolée sur la côte nord-ouest de la Nouvelle-Zélande. L’arrivée de Tai, un jeune homme sans attaches, décidé à s’installer dans la maison ayant appartenue à son grand-père, est à l’origine d’un accident tragique. Kimi devra trouver la force de vivre séparé de sa sœur Melody. Tai, quant à lui, devra affronter l’hostilité de la communauté qui voit en lui un fauteur de troubles et un porte-malheur ; il sera aidé par Tirea, une adolescente solitaire. Les rôles ont été confiés à des acteurs non professionnels, ce qui confère au film une émouvante authenticité en phase avec les paysages sauvages dans lesquels ils évoluent.
Childhood, sudden death, Maori culture, and rugged New Zealand scenery make a potent mix in THE STRENGTH OF WATER. This naturalistic melodrama taps a restrained undertow of magic realism to tell the story of ten-year-old twin brother and sister, Kimi and Melody, who live on a chicken farm with several other siblings and their hard-working parents in a secluded Maori community. The arrival of Tai, a teenage drifter looking to move into the local house that belonged to his grandfather, precipitates a terrible accident. Kimi must learn to live apart from Melody, and Tai must learn to deal with the hostility of those in the small community who equate him with the cursed house. Meanwhile Tirea, the lonely teenage girl in whom Kimi senses a kindred spirit, finds fragile understanding with the outcast Tai. The use of local inhabitants instead of professional actors lends the film an authenticity that befits the beautiful and raw nature among which it unfolds.
ARMAGAN BALLANTYNE
est originaire de Nouvelle Zélande. Elle a d’abord étudié le cinéma à Prague à la FAMU et ensuite à l’école de Cinéma de Sydney l’Australian Film Television and Radio School. « The Strenght of Water » est son premier long-métrage après les courts « Tripple Word Score » (1999), « Little Echo Lost » (1999) et le segment « Lily and Ra » de « Stories On Human Rights » (2008).
